Visceral Manipulation
Mobility of the organs (viscera) is an important component of optimal movement and function.
The viscera are connected to each other and the musculoskeletal system via a three dimensional web of fascia (connective tissue), which is continuous throughout the whole body. Abnormal tension in the fascia resulting from injury, surgery, disease, poor diet, and/or emotional stress can therefore influence all related structures and cause abnormal stress and strain potentially leading to pain and dysfunction. Overall, visceral manipulation techniques are designed to assess and mobilize restrictions in visceral motion.
Many of Synergy’s therapists have been trained in the specific visceral manipulation techniques developed by osteopath Jean-Pierre Barral. You can find these therapists by reading the team bios. As well, Synergy’s Dr. Linda-Joy (LJ) Lee has also created many unique treatment techniques in the Thoracic Ring Approach and ConnectTherapy that treat visceral restrictions by integrating specific manual techniques with different breathing patterns and movement (eg. Stack & Breathe, Dynamic Stack & Breathe); all of the therapists at Synergy are trained in these techniques.
